New at Rhode Island KIDS COUNT
| - According to the 2009 Quality Counts, 2.8% of 4th and 8th grade English Language Learners in RI were proficient in reading, compared to 29% statewide. Quality Counts tracks and grades state policies and student achievement in key areas of education. RI's overall grade is a "C". View RI's Education Week Report Card.
| - View the newly released House bill 5019 making appropriations for FY 2009 (the current budget).
| - The RI teen birth rate of 27.8 per 1,000 teens has decreased by 58% since 1991 according to a birth report by the National Center for Health Statistics. Nationally, there was a 3% increase in the teen birth rate for the first time after 14 years of steady decline.
| There will be a hearing on the terms and conditions of RI's Global Medicaid Waiver in the RI House Finance Committee on Fri., January 9th at 10 a.m. and if necessary, to be continued on Mon., January 12th at 1 p.m. in room 35 at the State House.
