INDICATOR: COST OF HOUSING

DEFINITION: Cost of housing is the percentage of income needed by a very low-income family to cover the average cost of rent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defines a very low-income family as family income less than 50% of the median family income. A cost burden exists when more than 30% of a family’s monthly income is spent on housing.
